Preston Basketball - A Recent Past

Preston Basketball - A Recent Past

Owen Stanley30 Mar 2021 - 18:40

The story continues at St. Augustine's New Avenham Centre...

After arriving at SANAC Preston Pride became a powerhouse in Lancashire, hosting regular Central Venue Leagues for Juniors at Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 level as well as elite offerings in the Junior National League. Alongside the Lancashire Basketball association, the club trained new coaches and officials alike. Many of them still operate locally or have moved on to other successful programs like Sam Fitzpatrick (North West Coaching Lead) and Neal Hopkins (Basketball Program Director at Myerscough College).

With players receiving North West call-ups almost every year, both the Senior and Junior sections went from strength to strength. The seniors won countless MABL honours and the Junior Under 16's reached the last 8 nationally in 2008 as well as a number of top 3 finishes in the North West conference.

During this time there was a changing of the guard, as new committee members joined the club to offer more support, Jane Ahmed (formerly Plumb) took over as Chairperson from Chris Smith, helping to build a more inclusive and community focus within the club. Preston saw its first Ladies' team compete in the National League and an Under 12's team was formed to cater to primary school pupils who were made aware of the club through community engagement events led by the club's younger coaches.

Following Jane's superb work laying the foundations, Tracey Bush joined the committee. She built on the successes until she stepped down in 2018 when the current committee took over, working on building a financially sustainable future and driving a brilliant product to offer to the local community and beyond.
