Morale-boosting win for Twos

After a result against Canute that was very tough to swallow, a Mavericks team that were flying high were probably almost last on our list of desirable follow-up fixtures. We travelled to Bury to play a team with a 13-2 record; one who had beaten our firsts by almost twenty points the week previously.

However, we knew we'd been playing well and were taking a strong squad capable of causing trouble for any team in this division. The opening exchanges were electric from both teams; Harry and Diddy starting hot from three but with Mavs finding answers. We were hoping to find ways to slow them after they took a 27-23 lead into the second quarter. The second followed a similar pattern but with the scoring from distance beginning to slow for both teams. However, we hit a difficult patch, which is often sadly our way, and we allowed them to take a ten-point lead. It felt like the moment we were unable to maintain our standards.

A strong unit started the third and it was their turn to begin to struggle. We started to ease our way back into the game, before a double punch of successive steals and finishes brought us immediately back in control of the momentum. We closed 50-50 with a shot at the game if we could keep rolling in the fourth.

We continued to dominate the boards from this point, with Andy and Pauli in particular hauling them down for fun. We also began to find our range again from outside, with back-to-back threes from Ewan and Diddy. This, supported by Harry's continued ability to keep the scoreboard ticking over, we found ourselves in an amazing position to have been on a 20-point run! From there we took time off the clock well, learning from previous errors and grabbed ourselves a real morale-boosting win.
